67c1c7c054 chore(core) Add approvals reviewer to UserTurn (#15426)
## Summary
Adds support for approvals_reviewer to `Op::UserTurn` so we can migrate
`[CodexMessageProcessor::turn_start]` to use Op::UserTurn

## Testing
- [x] Adds quick test for the new field

2f5b01abd6 add fast mode toggle (#13212)
- add a local Fast mode setting in codex-core (similar to how model id
is currently stored on disk locally)
- send `service_tier=priority` on requests when Fast is enabled
- add `/fast` in the TUI and persist it locally
- feature flag

951a389654 Allow clients not to send summary as an option (#12950)
Summary is a required parameter on UserTurn. Ideally we'd like the core
to decide the appropriate summary level.

Make the summary optional and don't send it when not needed.

1af2a37ada chore: remove codex-core public protocol/shell re-exports (#12432)
## Why

`codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` re-exported a broad set of types and modules
from `codex-protocol` and `codex-shell-command`. That made it easy for
workspace crates to import those APIs through `codex-core`, which in
turn hides dependency edges and makes it harder to reduce compile-time
coupling over time.

This change removes those public re-exports so call sites must import
from the source crates directly. Even when a crate still depends on
`codex-core` today, this makes dependency boundaries explicit and
unblocks future work to drop `codex-core` dependencies where possible.

## What Changed

- Removed public re-exports from `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` for:
- `codex_protocol::protocol` and related protocol/model types (including
`InitialHistory`)
  - `codex_protocol::config_types` (`protocol_config_types`)
- `codex_shell_command::{bash, is_dangerous_command, is_safe_command,
parse_command, powershell}`
- Migrated workspace Rust call sites to import directly from:
  - `codex_protocol::protocol`
  - `codex_protocol::config_types`
  - `codex_protocol::models`
  - `codex_shell_command`
- Added explicit `Cargo.toml` dependencies (`codex-protocol` /
`codex-shell-command`) in crates that now import those crates directly.
- Kept `codex-core` internal modules compiling by using `pub(crate)`
aliases in `core/src/lib.rs` (internal-only, not part of the public
API).
- Updated the two utility crates that can already drop a `codex-core`
dependency edge entirely:
  - `codex-utils-approval-presets`
  - `codex-utils-cli`

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-utils-approval-presets`
- `cargo test -p codex-utils-cli`
- `cargo check --workspace --all-targets`
- `just clippy`

8b3521ee77 feat(core) update Personality on turn (#9644)
## Summary
Support updating Personality mid-Thread via UserTurn/OverwriteTurn. This
is explicitly unused by the clients so far, to simplify PRs - app-server
and tui implementations will be follow-ups.

## Testing

ddcc60a085 Update defaults to gpt-5.1 (#6652)
## Summary
- update documentation, example configs, and automation defaults to
reference gpt-5.1 / gpt-5.1-codex
- bump the CLI and core configuration defaults, model presets, and error
messaging to the new models while keeping the model-family/tool coverage
for legacy slugs
- refresh tests, fixtures, and TUI snapshots so they expect the upgraded
defaults

## Testing
- `cargo test -p codex-core
config::tests::test_precedence_fixture_with_gpt5_profile`

9c903c4716 Add ItemStarted/ItemCompleted events for UserInputItem (#5306)
Adds a new ItemStarted event and delivers UserMessage as the first item
type (more to come).

Renames `InputItem` to `UserInput` considering we're using the `Item`
suffix for actual items.

04c1782e52 OpenTelemetry events (#2103)
### Title

## otel

Codex can emit [OpenTelemetry](https://opentelemetry.io/) **log events**
that
describe each run: outbound API requests, streamed responses, user
input,
tool-approval decisions, and the result of every tool invocation. Export
is
**disabled by default** so local runs remain self-contained. Opt in by
adding an
`[otel]` table and choosing an exporter.

```toml
[otel]
environment = "staging"   # defaults to "dev"
exporter = "none"          # defaults to "none"; set to otlp-http or otlp-grpc to send events
log_user_prompt = false    # defaults to false; redact prompt text unless explicitly enabled
```

Codex tags every exported event with `service.name = "codex-cli"`, the
CLI
version, and an `env` attribute so downstream collectors can distinguish
dev/staging/prod traffic. Only telemetry produced inside the
`codex_otel`
crate—the events listed below—is forwarded to the exporter.

### Event catalog

Every event shares a common set of metadata fields: `event.timestamp`,
`conversation.id`, `app.version`, `auth_mode` (when available),
`user.account_id` (when available), `terminal.type`, `model`, and
`slug`.

With OTEL enabled Codex emits the following event types (in addition to
the
metadata above):

- `codex.api_request`
  - `cf_ray` (optional)
  - `attempt`
  - `duration_ms`
  - `http.response.status_code` (optional)
  - `error.message` (failures)
- `codex.sse_event`
  - `event.kind`
  - `duration_ms`
  - `error.message` (failures)
  - `input_token_count` (completion only)
  - `output_token_count` (completion only)
  - `cached_token_count` (completion only, optional)
  - `reasoning_token_count` (completion only, optional)
  - `tool_token_count` (completion only)
- `codex.user_prompt`
  - `prompt_length`
  - `prompt` (redacted unless `log_user_prompt = true`)
- `codex.tool_decision`
  - `tool_name`
  - `call_id`
- `decision` (`approved`, `approved_for_session`, `denied`, or `abort`)
  - `source` (`config` or `user`)
- `codex.tool_result`
  - `tool_name`
  - `call_id`
  - `arguments`
  - `duration_ms` (execution time for the tool)
  - `success` (`"true"` or `"false"`)
  - `output`

### Choosing an exporter

Set `otel.exporter` to control where events go:

- `none` – leaves instrumentation active but skips exporting. This is
the
  default.
- `otlp-http` – posts OTLP log records to an OTLP/HTTP collector.
Specify the
  endpoint, protocol, and headers your collector expects:

  ```toml
  [otel]
  exporter = { otlp-http = {
    endpoint = "https://otel.example.com/v1/logs",
    protocol = "binary",
    headers = { "x-otlp-api-key" = "${OTLP_TOKEN}" }
  }}
  ```

- `otlp-grpc` – streams OTLP log records over gRPC. Provide the endpoint
and any
  metadata headers:

  ```toml
  [otel]
  exporter = { otlp-grpc = {
    endpoint = "https://otel.example.com:4317",
    headers = { "x-otlp-meta" = "abc123" }
  }}
  ```

If the exporter is `none` nothing is written anywhere; otherwise you
must run or point to your
own collector. All exporters run on a background batch worker that is
flushed on
shutdown.

If you build Codex from source the OTEL crate is still behind an `otel`
feature
flag; the official prebuilt binaries ship with the feature enabled. When
the
feature is disabled the telemetry hooks become no-ops so the CLI
continues to
function without the extra dependencies.
